About This Fundraiser

It’s Abigail’s birthday on June 13th - and what better way to celebrate than with a fundraiser for TNKR?!

“I volunteered with TNKR in South Korea, 2016. At that time, TNKR didn’t have an office - so it’s fantastic to see that all of directors Casey & EunKoo’s hard work has paid off!

I want to fundraise for TNKR because I’ve seen them build their services from the ground up and most importantly, I’ve seen their services work. I know how much love and effort they put into this, and I know TNKR survives off small fundraisers like this. I really have a lot to thank TNKR for. They provided me with so much insight into non-profit work, and my first experience working with refugees, which has undoubtedly widened my prospective on international affairs and allowed me to better understand the unpredictable positions refugees can find themselves in.

When the refugees enter the TNKR space, there’s one thing you can see on all their faces: determination to learn and improve their lives.

There are so many fantastic projects they have running at the moment that are open to funding, but this a general fund because they’re all such great causes I can’t decide, and I would like the directors of the charity to be able to prioritise where they need to.

Here’s what your money can do:
1. Help them pay rent on their office they worked for years to get. (When I was with TNKR, they would cram their guests into small meeting rooms to make do. This is a huge achievement for them and makes a big difference in the stability of their services).
2. Help fund my friend Hwang In-Cheol’s project to find out the truth about his father.
3. Support mothers. They have a new project specifically aimed to help busy refugee mothers, which you can read about on their site.
4. Help provide educational materials for their students, such as notebooks, pencils, pens, etc.
5. Buy the two directors, who are always rushed off their feet and barely pay themselves, a well-deserved coffee!

You can read more in detail about the different projects they have running on their website.

If you’re here to donate - thank you - and in return, here’s a book list of some fantastic reads to learn more about the lives of North Korean refugees:

- Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick
- Escape from Camp 14 by Blaine Harden
- In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park
- The Girl With Seven Names by Hyeon Seo Lee
- Dear Leader by Jang Jin-sung

No donation is too small. I’ve aimed to raise ₩300,000(South Korean Won) which is approx. £200/$250. So we’d just need 20 donations of £10 from the UK, or 25 donations of $10 in the US - even £1 or $5 would help!

Thank you!

About TNKR 2019 Matching Donation Challenge

Originally named "English Matching," Teach North Korean Refugees has helped almost 400 North Korean refugees with adjusting to living outside of North Korea. We have done this on a tight budget, relying on our volunteers and fans. Despite our limitations, we have had a number of success stories and are a non-profit that North Korean refugees seek out.

We now have a fan who has offered us the most ambitious matching donation challenge. He says that in 2019, he will raise more money than I have for TNKR. Please accept this challenge along with me! He is in the finance industry, and confident he can twist enough arms to help us become more financially stable.

To be clear: your donations to this fundraising page will be matched. Doubled. If you give $100, it will become $200. If you give $500, it will become $1,000. If you give $5 a month, it will become $10 a month.

These donations are tax-deductible in the USA and South Korea.

Se você doar US$100, ela se tornará US$200. Se você doar US$500, se tornará US$1.000.
