About This Fundraiser

TNKR helps match North Korean refugees with volunteer English-speaking tutors for private, personalized study sessions. To date, the program has taught over 250 North Korean refugees.

For those that manage to escape North Korea, incredible challenges remain. Leaving North Korea is punishable by death or torture. Escaping into neighboring China does not even guarantee immediate safety for refugees. Around two-thirds of refugees escaping are women, and over 70% of women refugees are estimated to be forced into human trafficking. These refugees are some most vulnerable people in the world, yet refugees are still being taken advantage of by human traffickers.

So much focus has been put on the regime and dictatorship of North Korea, but people often forget that the true victims of the situation are the people living in North Korea under unimaginable conditions. An entire comedy movie was made about Kim Jong Un, but not 1% of the profits went to actual, living refugees. News reports sensationalize military action by North Korea, but the refugees are given little media attention.

Giving to TNKR helps to fund future activities that raise awareness, tutor refugees, and gives a chance for a brighter future to those brave enough to leave North Korea.

About Casey Lartigue's fundraiser for TNKR

On March 1, 2012, I made a commitment to get involved with helping North Korean refugees. After a year of getting involved with various activities, on March 3, 2013, I co-founded along with South Korean researcher Eunkoo Lee an organization helping North Korean refugees.

Originally named "English Matching," Teach North Korean Refugees has helped more than 350 North Korean refugees with adjusting to living outside of South Korea. We have done this on a tight budget, relying on our volunteers and fans. Despite our limitations, we have had a number of success stories and are a non-profit that North Korean refugees seek out.
