About This Fundraiser
Hi, I'm Yooji Oh! I’m currently raising funds for TNKR’s English education program for North Korean refugees in South Korea. TNKR(Teach North Korean Refugees) is a nonprofit organization that aims to assist North Korean refugees in preparing for their future and transitioning to life outside of North Korea by providing them with free English learning opportunities.
[Why is English education important to resettled North Koreans?]
The North Korean people escape their country in search of freedom and a better life. After long, dangerous journey through China and South East Asia, most of those who successfully make their way out of North Korea resettle in South Korea. Even though North and South Koreans share the same ethnic background, history, and language, North Korean refugees face many challenges as they adjust to South Korean society.
English is one of the challenging aspects of resettlement process for North Korean refugees. Not many North Koreans have studied English back home, whereas English language skills are crucial for academic and professional success in South Korea. Not to mention that it is very common in South Korea to use English loan-words in daily life. It can be difficult and frustrating for many North Koreans who are not familiar with English language. But, with your support, more North Koreans will have access to English education and overcome the challenges they face in the resettlement process.
Please help me support passionate English learners from North Korea and TNKR’s education program! Any amount of donation would help a lot:)
Originally named "English Matching," Teach North Korean Refugees has helped almost 400 North Korean refugees with adjusting to living outside of South Korea. We have done this on a tight budget, relying on our volunteers and fans. Despite our limitations, we have had a number of success stories and are a non-profit that North Korean refugees seek out.
We now have a fan who has offered us the most ambitious matching donation challenge. He says that in 2019, he will raise more money than I have for TNKR. Please accept this challenge along with me! He is in the finance industry, and confident he can twist enough arms to help us become more financially stable.
To be clear: your donations to this fundraising page will be matched. Doubled. If you give $100, it will become $200. If you give $500, it will become $1,000. If you give $5 a month, it will become $10 a month.
These donations are tax-deductible in the USA and South Korea.
