About This Fundraiser
This year for my birthday all I’m asking for are donations for Teach North Korean Refugees (TNKR). TNKR is a nonprofit in South Korea which helps to empower North Korean refugees through personalized one-to-one English tutoring and speech coaching. After making a dangerous escape from North Korea, refugees still face difficulties and struggle to thrive in their new life. TNKR helps refugees tackle the English language barrier and gain confidence by having complete control over their English education. TNKR students join to improve their English to enter university, to get a job, and to become an advocate for change.
I’ve been working with TNKR for a few years now and I am grateful to being able to volunteer for a great organization. TNKR relies mainly on private donations to run its education center and events. Please join me in helping North Korean refugees by making a donation for my birthday!
About General Fund
In November 2016, the Ministry of Unification in South Korea reported that the number of North Korean refugees escaping to South Korea had surpassed 30,000. Various media report various challenges that refugees face in adjusting to South Korea. An estimated 35 percent of refugees are unemployed, 80 percent work in menial jobs, and refugees who are employed earn 50% of what South Koreans earn.
Escaping North Korea is the first battle many refugees face. Many report that English is a major barrier for many of them, as they struggle with "Konglish" words that have seeped into the South Korean language. TNKR helps refugees by connecting them with volunteer tutors. Since its founding in March 2013, TNKR has connected 315 refugees with more than 650 volunteer tutors and coaches.
