About This Fundraiser

Hello Family, Friends and Colleagues,

I've started a fundraiser to raise money for an important organization that has become part of my volunteering life here in Seoul, South Korea. Teach North Korean Refugeers (TNKR) is a non-political and non-religious non-profit humanitarian organization that focuses on assisting adults who have escaped North Korea in preparing for their future. TNKR focuses on providing free English learning opportunities to North Korean refugees.

To date, I've worked with 4 different North Korean Refugees, participating in both the individualized English tutoring and 1:1 Speech Coaching initiatives. I've seen first hand the impact the organization has had in helping over 250 North Korean Refugees.

For more information, please visit http://www.teachnorthkoreanrefugees.org/ or http://teachnorthkoreanrefugees.org/about/

Your funding will help support the continuation of all ongoing TNKR initiatives to support Refugees, and future projects including sponsoring overseas scholarships for refugees, setting up a Homework Helper project, and providing more practical opportunities for refugees to adjust to living outside of North Korea.

Thank you for your time and support for this important cause.

About General Fund

In November 2016, the Ministry of Unification in South Korea reported that the number of North Korean refugees escaping to South Korea had surpassed 30,000. Various media report various challenges that refugees face in adjusting to South Korea. An estimated 35 percent of refugees are unemployed, 80 percent work in menial jobs, and refugees who are employed earn 50% of what South Koreans earn.

Escaping North Korea is the first battle many refugees face. Many report that English is a major barrier for many of them, as they struggle with "Konglish" words that have seeped into the South Korean language. TNKR helps refugees by connecting them with volunteer tutors. Since its founding in March 2013, TNKR has connected more than 250 refugees with 492 volunteer tutors and coaches.
