About This Fundraiser

Hi to friends, family, and those of you who would love to help out a great cause!

As many of you know, I've been teaching English to my amazing, smart kiddos in Korea for the past year and a half, and will be here one more year until the beginning of March 2018. You may also have known that in Fall 2015, I began tutoring English to North Korean refugees with a program called Teach North Korean Refugees (TNKR) based in Seoul, South Korea. I am starting the program again, and am so humbled to have the opportunity and honor of working with these brave people who risked everything for a new life.

I have decided to train for my first half-marathon, to be run in the Cheorwon International DMZ Peach Marathon on September 24, 2017. I have never run more than 10K, so this will be a challenging and exciting at the same time! Any and all donations to sponsor my run and donate to an amazing cause are most appreciated. All donations will go to the TNKR program in order to help provide resources and further opportunities for refugees to not only learn English, but accomplish their goals in employment and living the lives they deserve.

Thank you so much!

About General Fund

In November 2016, the Ministry of Unification in South Korea reported that the number of North Korean refugees escaping to South Korea had surpassed 30,000. Various media report various challenges that refugees face in adjusting to South Korea. An estimated 35 percent of refugees are unemployed, 80 percent work in menial jobs, and refugees who are employed earn 50% of what South Koreans earn.

Escaping North Korea is the first battle many refugees face. Many report that English is a major barrier for many of them, as they struggle with "Konglish" words that have seeped into the South Korean language. TNKR helps refugees by connecting them with volunteer tutors. Since its founding in March 2013, TNKR has connected more than 250 refugees with 492 volunteer tutors and coaches.
