About This Fundraiser

Hello, everyone.

I was born in Orang County of North Korea’s North Hamgyong Province. Today, I live in Seoul, South Korea. North Korean refugees like myself have found physical freedom in South Korea, but at the cost of forever bidding farewell to our loved ones. In essence, we have lost our freedom to grieve. We are the living witnesses to the painful reality of inter-Korean separation. Each holiday is an agony, as it reminds us of our missing families. The separation cuts through our hearts, and we yearn for reunification more than anyone. We therefore represent the future, the reunification to come.

I extend my deepest gratitude to the co-founders of TNKR for giving us the courage to dream and to prepare for reunification. My sincere thanks to all the volunteer tutors as well, who gladly give up their time without asking anything in return.

Your support to TNKR is invaluable. Please support my fundraiser, so that this young North Korean turned South Korean can continue to empower herself to stand at the forefront of reunification.

Thank you very much.

Update, 2018-08-12:
Posted by Amy, a TNKR student since September 2015, as translated by Youngmin Kwon:

"TNKR, to whom I am always grateful. I was able to graduate from college thanks to this organization. Later, I met some great people, through whom I became interested in blockchain and got a job as a researcher at an art institute. Learning about life continues in workplaces after college, which is why I came back to TNKR to return to the basics. An organization I can always come back to when I am about to take a new step in life!! I truly appreciate them."

About TNKR 2019 Matching Donation Challenge

Originally named "English Matching," Teach North Korean Refugees has helped almost 400 North Korean refugees with adjusting to living outside of South Korea. We have done this on a tight budget, relying on our volunteers and fans. Despite our limitations, we have had a number of success stories and are a non-profit that North Korean refugees seek out.

We now have a fan who has offered us the most ambitious matching donation challenge. He says that in 2019, he will raise more money than I have for TNKR. Please accept this challenge along with me! He is in the finance industry, and confident he can twist enough arms to help us become more financially stable.

To be clear: your donations to this fundraising page will be matched. Doubled. If you give $100, it will become $200. If you give $500, it will become $1,000. If you give $5 a month, it will become $10 a month.

These donations are tax-deductible in the USA and South Korea.

If you have trouble donating via this website then contact me directly for other options. TNKR@teachnorthkoreanrefugees.org or CJL@alumni.harvard.edu
