About This Fundraiser
Giving Tuesday happens to be the day after my birthday (December 3rd)! So this year, instead of receiving gifts or monetary gifts for myself, I'd like gifts to be donated to the NGO I'm volunteering with: Teach North Korean Refugees (TNKR). If you donate to this fundraiser, it helps volunteers (such as myself) not have to pay money to use teaching facilities in Seoul, and also helps TNKR help North Korean refugees and their English education in the long run.
TNKR is a non-profit organization that provides free English language lessons to North Korean refugees through volunteer tutors in Seoul (and surrounding areas), South Korea. Many of the people who escape North Korea have never had the chance to learn English. If they did, it cannot be understood due to poor education. When they resettle into their new home, they quickly realize they need English to live and work in this ever globalizing society.
English academies in Seoul are insanely expensive (I would know) and most refugees cannot afford the education expenses for quality English on top of other new expenses coming with adjustment. This fundraiser is to help North Korean refugees in their journey to communicate in English, so they can not only survive in Seoul, but share who they are with the world.
An American who has been following TNKR since 2014 made a $5,000 donation to TNKR last night (October 29).
There's one "catch": The money is restricted and is to be held in a separate account until we match it by raising $5,000.
The reason? He wanted to provide all donors with 100% assurance in advance that their funds would be matched, and released the moment it hits $5,000, with zero delay.
The deadline? He suggests it would be better for us to take the challenge of raising this in one month.
Why is he doing this? Here are a few of the things he said when we talked.
He is inspired by:
* TNKR's staff keeping the focus on empowering North Korean refugees and building an organization from nothing.
* North Korean refugees studying so hard to improve themselves, and those who are willing to share their stories.
* Volunteers giving so much of their time as tutors and mentors.
